Sixteen-year-old Fabiola was born in the United States, but moved to Haiti when she was very young. As the story begins she and her mother are returning to the United States to start a new life in Detroit with Fabiola’s aunt and cousins. Things do not start well, as Fabiola’s mother is detained at the airport in New York. Fabiola is sent ahead to Detroit with promises that her mother will join her soon. Days turn into months as Fabiola learns that her aunt and cousins are trapped in the culture of American Street - violence, poverty and drug dealing. Fabiola hatches a plan to free her mother, but in the process she endangers the lives of everyone she loves. This is a brutally honest story about life and death struggles in our most troubled neighborhoods.
