Review: March: Book One

March: Book One March (Books One, Two, and Three) by John Lewis
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This series of three graphic novels tells the story of Congressman John Lewis and his experiences during the US Civil Rights Movement. Many of us know the events of the Civil Rights Movement to some extent: the Montgomery Bus Boycott, the 1963 March on Washington, Dr. Martin Luther King’s “I have a dream” speech... In these books, John Lewis takes us to a deeper level of understanding - behind the scenes of these events. We become eyewitnesses to the violence and the hatred. We are privy to the discussions and disagreements within the Movement. The power of this series lies in its ability to transport the reader back in time, to show us what it was really like.

As we follow the events of the Movement, we also follow John Lewis on the day of Barack Obama’s first inauguration. Some of the most emotional parts of the series occur at the inauguration and after, when John Lewis retires to his room to check his many voicemails from the day. I loved this outstanding series. It is much deserving of the unprecedented four awards it has received from the American Library Association.
