This powerful graphic novel adaptation of Octavia Butler's 1979 novel combines time-travel and slave-narrative techniques to lay bare the physical and emotional toll of slavery. A modern day interracial couple experience random episodes of time travel during which they are transported to a plantation in the pre-Civil War south. It becomes clear there is an ancestral connection to the plantation for our main character, Dana, and her life may well depend on how she navigates the dangers and intrigues of life as a slave.
