Can you imagine never walking on grass or breathing fresh air or having friends or going to school? Madeline is 17 and can never leave her house because she has an illness that makes her allergic to the world. Then Olly moves in next door and she suddenly yearns for more than her tiny little world. Olly and Madeline find a way to communicate and then to speak face to face - and then Madeline begins to consider what "living" really means and what she is willing to risk to experience it.
